Education Programs

Pathology Residents

The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office hosts a four-week core rotation in partnership with the Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This rotation provides junior and senior residents with firsthand experience in forensic autopsy and medicolegal death investigation.

Medical Students

The office also offers four-week elective rotations for medical students from multiple institutions, giving future physicians a distinctive opportunity to explore forensic pathology through direct observation, case participation, and exposure to real-world investigative practices.

Internships & Shadowing

We offer internships for students studying biology, forensic science, anthropology, criminal justice, public health, and related fields.

Shadowing opportunities allow students and educators to tour the facility and observe a postmortem examination under the supervision of a forensic pathologist or pathologist’s assistant.

Forensic Pathology Fellowship

In 2025, the office earned accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) through a partnership with Morehouse School of Medicine. This milestone establishes the nation’s first forensic pathology fellowship housed at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office is honored to collaborate with Morehouse School of Medicine and will welcome its inaugural fellow in July 2026.
