The Uniform Division responds to 
emergency and non-emergency calls, 
enforces traffic laws, and promotes 
community-oriented policing. Each of the 
four precincts also houses Investigative 
Units, where detectives handle cases

Police Records provides Police and Fire/EMS reports along with background checks and other services.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM  (Closed 1:00-2:00 PM for lunch)

Background Check/Criminal History
You may contact us via email at CriminalHistoryCheck@dekalbcountyga.gov to request a background check.

We will send you a form to fill out, which must be returned with payment. You must enclose a copy of your valid Government-issued ID card, passport or driver’s license with the form and payment.

Appointments encouraged and must be scheduled 24 hours prior to property retrieval. Please check for availability and make an appointment.

Requirements for Property Retrieval:

  • Valid government-issued ID required
  • Authorization letter needed for evidence items
  • Property not retrieved within 90 days may be disposed of
  • Firearm retrievals require background check

Firearm Retrieval Requirements
All firearm returns require a background check and valid photo ID.

  • Evidence Firearms: Must have the arresting officer’s approval and an Authorization of Release Form.
  • Safekeeping Firearms: Must provide proof of ownership (e.g., sales receipt) to the arresting officer.

Per Georgia law, firearms cannot be returned to individuals convicted of any felony, any misdemeanor or felony domestic violence, or those with an active Temporary Protective Order (TPO).

  • Door-to-door sales

Private parties where alcohol is being sold requires a permit. 

Requirements for Firearm Permits

  • Current valid state-issued driver’s license, current valid state-issued ID, or US Passport.
  • U.S. citizens born abroad and applicants who are naturalized U.S. citizens must provide a U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization, or resident alien card, in addition to their state-issued driver’s license or state-issued ID.
  • Probate Court Application and $5.00 cash.
