Open Records Request
DeKalb County is committed to transparency and follows the Georgia Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. 50-18-70 to 75).
Under Georgia’s Open Records Act, residents have the right to request access to public records maintained by the County, unless those records are exempt by law. This page provides an overview of the Open Records Act, along with guidance on how to submit a request, what types of records may be available, and the timelines and procedures that apply. Our goal is to ensure that all requests are handled promptly, accurately, and in accordance with state law.
How It Works
- Response Time: You will receive a response within 3 business days of your request. If more time is needed to gather the records, we will let you know.
- No Records: If the requested documents do not exist, you will be notified within 3 business days.
- Who to Contact: Submit requests directly to the department that maintains the records. Each department’s director or deputy director is the custodian of its records.
- No New Documents: The County is not required to create new reports, summaries, or records that do not already exist.
Fees & Payment
- Copy Fees: 10¢ per letter/legal page; actual cost for other sizes.
- Labor Fees: Based on the lowest-paid qualified employee’s rate. First 15 minutes are free.
- Over $25: You must approve the estimated cost before work begins.
- Over $500: Payment is required in advance.
