Hazard Mitigation: DEMA maintains comprehensive hazard mitigation plans to help local leaders understand natural disaster risks and develop long-term strategies to minimize future impacts on people, property, and the environment.

  • Updated in collaboration with BOLDplanning, Inc.
  • Approved by Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and FEMA
  • Addresses risks from floods, severe weather, winter storms, and more
School Safety

Protecting Our Most Important Investment

The Safe Schools Program supports school communities by providing training, awareness campaigns, and emergency plan reviews. Georgia Law (OCGA 20-2-1185) directs GEMA/HS to provide school safety training and technical assistance to the education, emergency management and public safety communities of Georgia.

  • School safety plan development and review, Natural disaster preparedness training, Hazardous materials response planning, Transportation emergency procedures, Weapons response protocols and Terrorism preparedness guidance

  • Emergency evacuation procedures, Severe weather response, Lockdown and shelter-in-place protocols, Crisis communication systems, Staff emergency response roles and Student safety education.
