Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson will sponsor a ribbon cutting and Fall Festival event at the E.M.B.A.R.C. Youth Farm on Oct. 28, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. at 1185 Rock Chapel Rd, Lithonia, Ga. The Fall Festival is the official kickoff of the highly anticipated E.M.B.A.R.C. Youth Farm and is an occasion for families, friends and neighbors to celebrate the fall season. The event begins with a ribbon cutting at noon. Guests are asked to park at the Bruce Street Senior Center located at 2484 Bruce Street, Lithonia, Ga. A shuttle will transport attendees to the event.

Commissioner Larry Johnson sponsored DeKalb County’s workforce housing ordinance, which was unanimously approved by the Board of Commissioners and will be effective in December 2023. Commissioner Johnson led the charge for several years for the workforce housing ordinance to help mitigate the challenges of the missing middle. The missing middle are those individuals who make too much to be eligible for subsidized housing, but who don’t make enough to afford the new construction that is happening in the county.

Co-sponsors Commissioners Steve Bradshaw, District 4, and Michelle Long Spears, District 2, along with the Board of Commissioners and CEO Michael Thurmond, recognized October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a proclamation today at the Board of Commissioners meeting. October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989 acknowledging domestic violence. Domestic violence impacts people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.
