The DeKalb County Police Department is hosting a One Stop Shop Hiring event on Saturday, July 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1950 West Exchange Place, Tucker. Candidates will have the opportunity to complete the hiring process and potentially walk away with a conditional offer to start employment on Sept. 16. The new starting salary for certified officers is up to $64,640 and up to $60,060 for non-certified individuals.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs’ Friends of Flat Shoals Park will host a Book it to the Park book drive on Saturday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Flat Shoals Park, 4522 Flat Shoals Pkwy. Decatur, Ga. 30034. The Friends of Flat Shoals Park began hosting the Book it to the Park event shortly after the installation of the new book box in 2017. The book box has been a success and is heavily utilized by youth in the community. In an effort to support literacy, we encourage the community to donate new and gently used children’s books to the event.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host a Gateway to Fishing Program, Saturday, Aug. 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Chapel Hill Park, 3985 LeHigh Blvd., Decatur, Ga. The event will take place at the fishing pond.

In response to National Weather Service forecasts of heat indices exceeding 100 degrees, DeKalb County is opening cooling centers Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5. For a list of available cooling centers, visit www.dekalbcountyga.gov/weather. On July 4, DeKalb County libraries will be closed.

On Monday, July 8, Bobbie Lane will extend the road closure for approximately four weeks, barring any weather delays. Crews will require a road closure to replace sewer lines, which are a part of the Cobb Creek Sewer Improvement Project. During this closure, there will be detour signs in place to direct traffic around the closed off portion of the road. The road closure will be intermittent during the week, and the road will be open on the weekend.
