DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond’s final food distribution is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23. Since May 2020—the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic—more than 170,000 boxes of food have been distributed at more than 40 distribution events. “It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the Board of Commissioners, faith leaders and community volunteers to help fight food insecurity in DeKalb County,” CEO Thurmond said. “The most important four-letter word in the English language is ‘care,’ and I believe that over the past four years, we have faithfully cared for our fellow residents who have been fighting to feed their families.”

Some voters in DeKalb County will head to the polls again in the upcoming General/Special Election runoff, scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. When a candidate does not receive 50 percent plus one vote during the General Election, a runoff election is held. The runoff election will include: DeKalb County Commission District 3, DeKalb County Super District 7, Atlanta City Council Post 3 (At-Large) and Doraville City Council District 1 – Post 2 (At-Large).

The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) is hosting its 5th Annual Winter Clothing Drive on November 26, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the DeKalb Police Headquarters at 1960 W. Exchange Pl. Tucker, Ga. DKPD is asking the community to aid in keeping those in need warm by donating gently used shoes, coats and new socks. Donations will be accepted for all sizes and genders.

In observance of Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 28, sanitation collection service for residential customers will be based on the following revised collection schedule. The Seminole Road Landfill, and the Central and North Transfer Stations will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28, reopening on Friday, Nov. 29, during normal operating hours. The Customer Care call center and administration building will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 28, and Friday Nov. 29, reopening on Monday, Dec. 2, during normal operating hours.

Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open four warming centers for residents on Wednesday, Nov. 20, Thursday, Nov. 21, and Friday, Nov. 22, starting at 8 p.m. Frontline Response International has been contracted to serve individuals who need assistance during extreme weather conditions. Unlike DeKalb’s traditional warming centers, hot meals, beds, and case management services are centralized at Frontline. DeKalb offers transportation services from all its warming centers to Frontline for individuals who wish to take advantage of those centralized services.
