On Dec. 4, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announces the launch of a $13 million program aimed at reducing homelessness and preventing evictions. “By providing housing for the homeless and rental assistance for the housing insecure, this program’s two-pronged approach continues DeKalb’s commitment to counter the housing affordability crisis in our county,” said CEO Thurmond. “DeKalb County is investing millions to get and keep families in affordable homes.”

DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting at 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 2, 2024. The Board of Trustees will be joined by the DeKalb Library Foundation board for this meeting. The meeting will be held at Darro C. Willey-Administrative Center, 3560 Kensington Rd., Decatur, GA 30032. The meeting will also be livestreamed. Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open the following four warming centers for residents on Thursday, Nov. 28-Tuesday, Dec. 3, starting at 8 p.m. Frontline Response International has been contracted to serve individuals who need assistance during extreme weather conditions. Unlike DeKalb’s traditional warming centers, hot meals, beds, and case management services are centralized at Frontline. DeKalb offers transportation services from all its warming centers to Frontline for individuals who wish to take advantage of those centralized services.

The DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will host a hiking stick workshop on Saturday, Dec. 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Center, 3787 Klondike Rd., Stonecrest, GA. Participants, ages 13 and up, are encouraged to join Ranger Rick for a hands-on workshop to learn how to carve their very own hiking stick to use on the next adventure to the preserve. All tools and materials will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will host an Arabia Mountain Volunteer Stewardship Day on Saturday, December 7, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Center, 3787 Klondike Rd, Stonecrest, GA. Participants are encouraged to come out to the Arabia Mountain Nature Center to help improve the health and beauty of the nature preserve. Park staff will join volunteers in removing invasive plants and trash, mulching trails and more. Each participant must provide his or her own gloves and water. All tools and materials will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
