The closure of Livingstone Place, between East College Avenue and Craigie Avenue, will be extended through next year Jan. 31. Crews will continue construction activities associated with the Scott Boulevard Water Main Replacement Project Phase III. Motorists should expect delays stemming from the road closure. Precautionary signs and traffic flaggers will assist in moving local traffic safely around the road closure.

Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open the following four warming centers for residents on each night Friday, Dec. 20, through Monday, Dec. 23, starting at 8 p.m. Frontline Response International has been contracted to serve individuals who need assistance during extreme weather conditions. Unlike DeKalb’s traditional warming centers, hot meals, beds, and case management services are centralized at Frontline. DeKalb offers transportation services from all its warming centers to Frontline for individuals who wish to take advantage of those centralized services.

DeKalb County will end the 2024 fiscal year with a projected $150 million fund balance. “We have ushered in a new era of financial accountability in DeKalb County as evidenced by eight years of balanced budgets and a growing rainy-day fund,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. The county’s fiscal health allowed CEO Thurmond to authorize a $1,500 employee retention incentive bonus for DeKalb’s 6,000 employees last month. This was the fourth year that employees received a retention incentive bonus.

The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) is partnering with Macy’s Northlake Mall for its second “Shop with a Cop” event on December 19 at 9 a.m. Macy’s has sponsored 30 children, chosen by officers in DKPD’s Police Athletic League, from ages three to 16 to pick out items from their wish lists. DKPD and Macy’s are working together to ensure that all children have something under the tree this holiday season.

The DeKalb County Sanitation Division will offer free Christmas tree curbside collection service for county residents until Jan. 9, 2025. Trees will be collected during residents’ regularly scheduled sanitation collection service days. To participate, residents must remove all decorations from trees and place them curbside. Tree length must be 7 feet or less.
