Today, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced a proposed multimillion-dollar comprehensive strategy to enhance public safety and prevent violent crimes. “This funding will allow us to proactively work to mitigate the growing crisis of homicides and violent crimes in metro Atlanta and holistically address the root causes and effects of crime throughout DeKalb County,” CEO Thurmond said.

DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson will host DeKalb County South Precinct Police Meetups beginning at 2 p.m. each Saturday starting May 22 through June 26. “I believe in cultivating and building strong relationships between our community and police,” Commissioner Johnson said. “This is why police meetups like these are so important for everyone to know we must all work together to make our communities what we want them to be currently and in the future.”

On Tuesday, May 25, DeKalb County and its contractors will temporarily interrupt water service to businesses and residents between 2308 to 2960 Shallowford Road from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., to properly replace a leaking 30-inch water line. Residents and businesses will experience low water pressure for several hours.

In observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, garbage, recyclable materials and yard trimmings collection for residential customers will run one day late. The North Transfer Station will be open from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, May 31. The Central Transfer Station and Seminole Road Landfill will be closed on Monday, May 31, reopening on Tuesday, June 1, during normal operating hours.

Briarcliff Way NE, between Clifton Road NE and Old Briarcliff Road NE, will be closed to through-traffic from midnight to 4 a.m., Saturday, May 22, to facilitate the filming of Emergency in Decatur. Road closure and detour signs will be placed in the area during the road closure period advising motorists of construction work in the area and of local traffic restrictions.
