DeKalb County will open three warming centers for residents to use overnight. Warming centers will be open in the following DeKalb County Fire Stations tonight, Jan. 2, beginning at 8 p.m. Anyone staying in the warming centers must follow the county’s COVID-19 protocols which include wearing a mask, social distancing and undergoing a temperature check.

Due to recent heavy rains a portion of Zinzendorf Drive, near Herrenhut Road in Stonecrest, has been damaged. Repair crews are onsite to stabilize the road until permanent repairs are made. Motorists traveling in the area are reminded to reduce their speeds in the work zone and avoid the area if possible.

Earlier this week many Dekalb County customers experienced some disruption to residential sanitation service caused by COVID-related staffing issues. As of Friday, December 31, all solid waste and the majority of recycling and yard trimmings have been collected. Unserved customers should leave recycling carts and bagged yard trimmings at the curb.

DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond announced today that the county will begin distributing 5,000 at-home COVID-19 rapid test kits to residents starting at 9:00 a.m. on Thurs., December 30, at three locations. “DeKalb County residents are waiting for hours in long lines to be tested for the COVID-19 virus,” said CEO Thurmond. “This is unacceptable. Our goal is to reduce the frustration and anxiety growing out of the shortage of COVID-19 testing resources and options.”

Efforts to improve water service capacity throughout DeKalb County continues on Monday, Jan. 3, with the launch of the Panthersville Road Water Line Replacement Project. Work will include the installation of 7,800 linear feet of new, 12-inch-diameter water line on Panthersville Road between River Road and Bouldercrest Road.
