DeKalb Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs’ Friends of Flat Shoals Park will host a Book it to the Park book drive on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Flat Shoals Park, 4522 Flat Shoals Pkwy. Decatur, GA 30034. The Friends of Flat Shoals Park began hosting the Book it to the Park event shortly after the installation of the new book box in 2017.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department will host a Movies in the Park series during the month of July. Every Wednesday, in various locations across the county, a movie will be shown at dusk, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring family, friends, blankets, lawn chairs and food for each showing. All movies featured will be PG-13 and below rated films and appropriate for all ages to enjoy.

The DeKalb County Police Athletic League (PAL) Unit has is hosting an “After Dark Basketball Summer League” Program to bridge the gap between the youth of DeKalb County and the DeKalb County Police Department through sports. Over the course of the summer a diverse group of professionals will come to the “After Dark Basketball Summer League” to share words of wisdom about their life experiences with the participants during the mandatory life skill workshops that will take place prior to each night’s games being played. 

Applications are now being accepted for the DeKalb County Police Department’s second Youth Academy. This is an opportunity for DeKalb County youth ages 14-17 to learn how their police department works. During the one-day, in-person program, which will be held on Saturday, July 30, students will be given an overview of the department’s various units, including K9, SWAT and Crime Scene. They will also learn what to do when they encounter police.

Efforts to improve sewer service capacity throughout DeKalb County continues Wednesday, July 6, with the launch of the Emerald Castle Sewer Upsizing Project. Crews will replace 1500 linear feet of aging sewer lines with new 12” ductile-iron pipes. The line repair project is expected to last approximately 4 months (July to November 2022), barring any weather delays.
