DeKalb County has cancelled its second annual Juneteenth celebration, scheduled for June 18, due to high temperatures. With temperatures and the heat index expected to be in the 90s, the county is cancelling the event out of an abundance of caution.

DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson invites the residents of DeKalb District 3 to the 20th Annual Community Empowerment Session (Town Hall) Thursday, June 16, at 6:30 p.m. at DeKalb Memorial Park, 353 Wilkinson Drive, SE. Atlanta, GA 30317. Commissioner Larry Johnson appropriated $1.4 million from the American Rescue Plan to various community-based organizations to assist with mortgage, rent, utilities, food and water bill assistance. This year’s theme is District 3 CARES.

DeKalb County is making recreation centers and libraries throughout the county available as cooling centers due to the ongoing heat advisory. As defined by the National Weather Service's Peachtree City Forecast Office, a heat advisory is issued when “feels like” temperatures are expected to reach or be greater than 103 degrees, or when the actual air temperature is expected to be at 105 degrees or greater.

DeKalb County Government is partnering with local faith leaders to distribute 5,000 boxes of 100 percent Georgia-grown fruits and vegetables, eggs, and chicken hindquarters on Saturday, June 18. Additionally, there will be juice boxes and single-serve cereal for children. Residents will receive about $45 worth of food on a first-come, first-served basis.

DeKalb Board of Voter Registration and Elections (DeKalb BRE) approved the addition of one new advance voting location during a Special Called Meeting on June 10. Neighborhood Church, located at 1561 McLendon Ave. NE in Atlanta will serve as the eleventh advance voting location.
