The Sustainability Division supports environmental stewardship, conservation, and community education in DeKalb County. Programs focus on tree canopy, greenspace, water quality, recycling, energy efficiency, and partnerships that promote a healthy and resilient community.
DeKalb County is a Gold Level Certified Green Community under the Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Green Communities Program, demonstrating the county’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and leadership in sustainability practices.

The Arbor Day Foundation named DeKalb County a 2025 Tree City USA in honor of its commitment to plant, grow, and maintain trees to benefit its community.

Releaf DeKalb is a program in partnership with Trees Atlanta to beautify DeKalb County and expand our tree canopy. This program includes tree installations in public spaces, as well as in the front or side yards of residents of unincorporated DeKalb County.

Water Quality & Runoff Education
Stormwater runoff can carry pollutants into local waterways. Residents can reduce runoff and improve water quality through simple practices such as native plantings, rain gardens, and reduced impervious surfaces.
Operational stormwater maintenance is handled by Department of Watershed Management (DWM).
Resources are available to help residents understand how stormwater impacts water quality and the environment.
Recycling & Waste Reduction
Residents can reduce waste through recycling, composting, and sustainable material choices. Programs may include household recycling, special material events, and community education.
Operational waste collection is managed by Sanitation Services.

Energy & Climate Programs
Energy programs support efficient energy use in homes and businesses. Climate initiatives may include community partnerships, resilience strategies, and educational campaigns.
In 2007 DeKalb County adopted a policy requiring that all building projects with an estimated cost of $5 million or greater be constructed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
