Boards & Councils
Several boards and councils support public participation in zoning, land use, and historic preservation decisions in unincorporated DeKalb County.
These advisory and decision-making bodies review applications, hold public meetings, and provide recommendations as part of the public hearing process.
Together, these groups help ensure residents have meaningful opportunities to learn about proposed projects, share input, and participate in local planning and development decisions.
Boards & Councils
- Planning Commission: Second Tuesday of every other/every two months 6:00 PM
- Board of Commissioners (Zoning): Fourth Thursday of every other/every two months, 5:30 PM
- Zoning Board of Appeals: Second Wednesday of each month, 1:00 PM

Community Councils provide an early opportunity for residents to learn about zoning and land use applications that may affect their neighborhoods. Councils hold public meetings to review applications and offer non-binding recommendations to the Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission reviews zoning and land use requests, public hearing cases, and related studies. Following review, the Commission makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners.
Meetings are open to the public.
The Zoning Board of Appeals considers variances and appeals related to zoning and land use. The ZBA may approve, deny, or grant conditions on variance requests.
Meetings are open to the public.
The Historic Preservation Commission reviews Certificates of Appropriateness (COA) for properties in local historic districts. The Commission ensures improvements are consistent with adopted design standards.
