Our Mission

To promote clean, sustainable, and beautiful DeKalb communities through environmental stewardship, community partnerships, and resident engagement.

What We Do

The Beautification Unit protects and enhances DeKalb County's streets, rights-of-way, intersections, and public properties through:

  • Litter and illegal dumping cleanup
  • Roadside maintenance (mowing, tree trimming, curb cleaning)
  • Community engagement programs

Adopt-a-Mile Program

DeKalb County’s Adopt-a-Mile Program invites residents, businesses, and community groups to help reduce litter and beautify neighborhoods.

Volunteers can adopt roads, intersections, traffic islands, county properties, or MARTA bus stops — committing to four cleanups per year.

We Provide:

  • Free cleanup supplies and safety training
  • Recognition signage
  • Orange bag pickup and disposal

Requirements:

  • Four cleanups per year
  • Submit cleanup reports within two business days
  • Follow safety protocols

Community Beautification Projects

Clean, well-maintained communities discourage littering and illegal dumping, improve sustainability, and enhance neighborhood pride.

Through partnerships with residents, the Beautification Unit supports community cleanups, landscaping, and tree planting projects.

Rain Barrel Workshops

Save water and go green!

Each spring and fall, residents can build their own rain barrels from recycled drums in a hands-on workshop that promotes water conservation and sustainability.

Details:

  • Cost: $50 (includes barrel & installation kit)
  • Location: 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, Decatur, GA 30032
  • Minimum Group Size: 25 participants

Roadside Enhancement Program

The Beautification Unit maintains unincorporated DeKalb County through mowing, tree trimming, herbicide treatments, curb cleaning, and street sweeping.

These services improve appearance, enhance safety, and support a cleaner, healthier environment.

 

Service Overview

Mowing: April–November: County crews (67 routes, monthly) and contractors (128 routes, 6-week cycle)

Tree Trimming: Year-round: 15'–20' ft. clearance from road, 5'–6' ft. from curb

Herbicide Treatment: April–November: Every 6 weeks

Street Sweeping: Year-round debris removal; new locations may be requested

Processing Time: 60–90 days after approval

Q. Who handles illegal dumping on private property?

A. Contact DeKalb County Code Enforcement. Beautification Unit only handles public property.

Q. What supplies do I need to return after cleanup events?

A. All supplies except orange bags (we handle pickup and disposal). Return within one week unless you're an Adopt-a-Mile member.

Q. Where can I watch county meetings?

A. DCTV broadcasts are available online and on local cable channels. Contact dmlewis@dekalbcountyga.gov for details.

Q. How long does it take to process service requests?

A. Reports are reviewed within 5 business days. Approved services are completed within 60-90 days.

Q. Can I request mowing
for my neighborhood?

A. Yes, submit a request online. Our team will conduct a site visit 
and assessment.

Q. What areas does the Beautification Unit serve?
