With Hurricane Helene predicted to result in widespread downed trees, power outages, blocked roadways and localized flooding, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond urges residents to be aware of how to report emergencies for an expedited response. “We urge residents to stay off the roads, and if necessary, properly reporting emergencies can expedite a coordinated response by the appropriate department or agency tasked with handling the issue,” CEO Thurmond said.

Though the landfall and potential impacts of Tropical Storm Helene are currently unknown, DeKalb County Government is working with internal departments and local agencies to ensure readiness and response. This includes reviewing department plans, verifying continuity of operations and conducting assessments on infrastructure throughout the county.

Efforts to improve the watershed system throughout DeKalb County continues with the design of Shoal Creek Trunk Sewer. The county confirms and will host a Public Information Open House (PIOH) event about this project. The Shoal Creek Trunk Sewer Replacement Project will address repeat sanitary sewer overflow areas and help meet future sewer demands for the next 50 years. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 and last approximately three years (2026 to 2029), barring any unforeseen circumstances and weather delays.

The DeKalb County Sanitation Division will host a free paper shredding event on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, from 8 a.m. - noon, at the DeKalb County Sanitation Division’s Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, Decatur, GA 30032. Event participants will have an opportunity to responsibly dispose of all types of documents, including sensitive personal documents such as old tax records and legal documents. All documents will be shredded on-site, and each participant will be limited to ten standard-size boxes of paper. Shredding services will be provided by A1 Shredding & Recycling.
