DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha V. Ramos will host a virtual women’s roundtable at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, on the department’s Facebook page and DCTV. During the “Candid Conversation with Women in Policing” event, Chief Ramos and other female officers of all ranks will discuss policing from a woman’s perspective.

Inflation and the rising cost of goods and services are creating financial hardships for many DeKalb County residents. As a result, basic needs such as rent, food and utilities are going unmet. To alleviate some of these burdens, Commissioner Robert Patrick is offering water bill assistance for residents of District 1 through St. Vincent de Paul’s utility program.

Efforts to improve water service capacity throughout DeKalb County continues on Monday, March 28, with the launch of the Buford Highway Emergency Sewer Line Replacement Project. Crews will replace 60 linear feet of failing sewer line with new 8-inch ductile-iron pipe near 3700 Buford Highway. This line repair project is expected to last approximately two weeks, from March 28 to April 8), barring any weather delays.

On March 15, the Hank Stewart Foundation announced DeKalb County Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson as the 2022 Rita Samuel “Power of the Woman” award recipient in honor of Women’s History Month. The award is given to women who embody the spirit of Rita Samuel of speaking “truth to power” with the goal to strengthen and empower youth in communities. These sheroes serve selflessly in their community and their impact is felt throughout the state of Georgia and beyond.
