DeKalb will honor a Rhodes scholar, two youth organizations engaged in human rights advocacy and a 14-year-old entrepreneur during the county’s 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. The awards will be presented at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, during a brief King Day celebration at James R. Hallford Stadium, 3789 Memorial College Ave., Clarkston, GA 30021.

DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha V. Ramos will host the department’s first Virtual Community Q&A of 2021. The Q&A will be broadcast at 6 p.m., Sunday, January 17, on the department’s Facebook page. Questions or concerns can be submitted now on the Facebook event post or submitted live during the Q&A session.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners unanimously re-elected District 4 Commissioner Steve Bradshaw as presiding officer and Super District 7 Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson as deputy presiding officer. “I am honored and humbled by the renewed vote of confidence in me that has been demonstrated by my esteemed colleagues,” Commissioner Bradshaw said. “And I will continue to work hard to prove myself worthy of their support.”

DeKalb County will continue its longstanding tradition of celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting its first food distribution of 2021 alongside an abbreviated program on Jan. 18. The King Day theme for 2021 is “The Urgency of Creating the Beloved Community.”
