Recently, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to designate a location for the future home of a memorial honoring Congressman John Lewis. The former site of the Lost Cause obelisk monument outside of the DeKalb History Center in Decatur was selected as the future site of the memorial honoring Congressman John Lewis.

DeKalb County has allocated $1 million to provide one-time grants of up to $1,500 for eligible students to cover living expenses, including mortgage assistance, food, transportation and utilities. In December 2020, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced the Dislocated Workers’ Career Pathway Initiative funded with some of the county’s federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) monies.

For the past 16 years, DeKalb Watershed Management has sponsored the Art Calendar Contest. The contest aims to promote awareness of the importance of water for a healthy way of life and sustainable future. This year’s theme is “How Can Water Keep Us Safe.”

The DeKalb County Police Athletic League (PAL Plus) will host its second annual Gaming with a Cop competition. The virtual event will be Monday, February 15, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open to participants from ages 12 to 16, the event provides an opportunity for law enforcement to connect with youth on a fun, yet competitive level with three separate gaming competitions. One competition has a top prize of $300, while the top prize for the two remaining games is $150 each. Registration is free at www.dekalbrsvp.com.

On Feb. 2, the southbound lane along Thurman Road, between Old McDonough Road and Wilburn Road, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while crews work to rehabilitate 195 linear feet of ductile-iron sewer pipe. This section of Thurman Road will reopen on Saturday, Feb. 6.
