Yesterday, the Governing Authority of DeKalb County Government approved a Resolution presented by Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson supporting DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond in performing an external audit of DeKalb County Animal Services managed by LifeLine Animal Project, Inc. The external audit will include animal shelter operations, policies, and practices. This action comes after almost a year of allegations about concerning shelter operations, small dog cages, dirty cages, sanitation, housekeeping, clogged air ducts and overcrowding.

This is the kickoff to a series of events aiming to address, discuss and tackle the animal services challenges facing DeKalb County.

In observance of Presidents Day on Monday, Feb. 19, sanitation service for residential customers will run one day late. The North Transfer Station will be open from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19. The Central Transfer Station, Seminole Road Landfill, administration building and Customer Care call center will be closed on Monday, Feb. 19, reopening on Tuesday, Feb. 20, during normal operating hours.

The DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs has opened registration for youth track-and-field. The registration fee is $40 per participant. Participants must be between the ages of 5 to 14 and a birth certificate is required to register. Registration includes four track meets. Practice dates and times will be determined by recreation centers. Registration is open through March 9.

DeKalb Industrial Way,near the intersection of Lawrenceville Highway, will be closed from 7 p.m., Feb. 15, to 7 a.m., Feb. 27, as part of the Scott Boulevard Water Main Replacement Project Phase II. The closure will be in effect 24 hours a day.
