EARTHDAY.ORG, the global organizer of Earth Day and the largest recruiter of environmental movements worldwide, has proclaimed this year’s theme “our power, our planet,” a call to action through education, advocacy and community support.

The DeKalb County Sanitation Division will host a free paper shredding event Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 8 a.m. - noon, at the DeKalb County Sanitation Division’s Central Transfer Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Drive, Decatur, GA 30032. Event participants will have an opportunity to responsibly dispose of all types of documents, including sensitive personal documents such as old tax records and legal documents. All documents will be shredded on-site, and each participant will be limited to ten standard-size boxes of paper. Shredding services will be provided by A1 Shredding & Recycling.

As part of an aggressive countywide effort to crack down on crime and reckless driving, the DeKalb County Police Department’s Special Operations Division conducted a high-visibility Spring Operation Safety Checkpoint on Friday, April 11, 2025. The initiative is a cornerstone of CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson’s public safety strategy, which combines proactive policing, multi-agency collaboration, and targeted enforcement to reduce crime and save lives.

Efforts to improve the watershed system throughout DeKalb County continue Monday, April 28, with the launch of the Roman Court Sewer Improvement Project. Crews will replace approximately 3,391 feet of gravity sewer main between Roman Court and Brockett Road. This sewer improvement project is expected to last approximately twelve months (April 2025 to May 2026), barring any weather delays.

Recently, DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson hosted her first annual Mayors Retreat, held at Emory University’s Miller-Ward Alumni House. The event was a full day working session, bringing together city leaders across DeKalb to focus on strategy, collaboration and shared goals. Mayors from each municipality were given the opportunity to present their top three priorities and engage in targeted discussions around housing, infrastructure, public safety, economic development, mental health and more.
