DeKalb County Police Detective Casey Benton has been named by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP) as the 2021 Outstanding Police Officer of the Year. Detective Benton, who has been with the DeKalb County Police Department for 15 years, received his award in July 2021 during the GACP’s training conference in Savannah.

On Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, District 1 County Commissioner Robert Patrick will kick off a series of casual informal meetings with residents titled “Coffee with Commissioner.” The event is designed to provide a space for residents to come out, meet their commissioner and discuss topics that matter the most to them while enjoying a cup of coffee.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs youth basketball program registration is now open until Oct. 30. County youth ages 5 to 6 are invited to sign up for instructional basketball. The registration fee is $25 and will include one uniform. Youth ages 7 to 18 are encouraged to register for $65 to participate in a divisional basketball league and will receive one uniform.

The John Lewis Commemorative Taskforce will host a virtual kickoff event at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, to celebrate the launch of a campaign to raise funds for a new memorial to Congressman John Lewis. Featured speakers include Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty, Sen. Jon Ossoff, Sen. Raphael Warnock, Congressman Hank Johnson, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, former State Sen. Jason Carter and Michael Collins, Congressman Lewis’ former chief of staff.

Due to Tropical Storm Fred, the DeKalb County Sanitation Division may experience sanitation service delays for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday customers. Sanitation crews will work through Saturday, if necessary, to ensure all households are serviced. Residents are encouraged to keep their garbage, recycling and yard trimmings at the curb until servicing occurs.
