DeKalb County Cooperative Extension will host Family and Consumer Sciences virtual classes for free. Radon Webinars will be on December 14, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. and January 24, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. Radon occurs naturally when uranium breaks down to form radon. It can build up to dangerous levels inside homes, schools, and other buildings. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after tobacco smoke.

Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open five warming centers for residents on Tuesday, Dec. 5, Wed. Dec. 6, and Thursday, Dec. 7, starting at 8 p.m. each night to use. Anyone staying in the warming centers must follow the county’s COVID-19 protocols that include wearing a mask, social distancing and undergoing a temperature check.

On Nov. 28, 2023, a stray cat was captured in the Willow Lake Drive area and later tested positive for rabies. A resident was attempting to place a stray cat inside a pet carrier when he was bitten on his chin and finger. Georgia is a rabies endemic state and the virus is present all year long. It is not unusual for the county to report several rabies cases each year.

The Family Night Out program offers a safe, fun environment for the whole family to share an exciting painting experience together. All ages are welcome to participate and encouraged to wear matching pajamas. Registration is $10 for a family of 2, $20 for a family of 4, $30 for a family of 6 and $5 for an additional person. The event will include painting supplies, food, music, photos and more. Pre-registration is required and on a first come, first served basis.
