The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners held the first meeting of the 2024 year and elected a new presiding officer and deputy presiding officer. The board elected Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson and Commissioner Robert Patrick to serve as the presiding officer and deputy presiding officer, respectively, for 2024. Davis Johnson, who represents District 5, previously served as deputy presiding officer for the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners for two terms.

Beginning Jan. 11 to Jan. 16, contractors working on behalf of DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management will conduct water main work on the Scott Boulevard Water Main Replacement Project Phase III. Construction activities associated with this work will require a temporary interruption of water service on Brown Place.

DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced the appointment of Hunter Hines as Interim Director of DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK). Hines will be responsible for the daily operations of the second busiest airport in Georgia. “Mr. Hines wealth of knowledge and experience will be invaluable to maintaining PDK as one of the most important economic development factors for DeKalb County,” said CEO Thurmond. “He is a young, energetic professional who will continue PDK’s growth and advancement.”

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15, garbage, recyclable materials and yard trimmings collection for residential customers will be based on a revised collection schedule. The North Transfer Station will be open from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, resuming normal operating hours on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The Central Transfer Station, Seminole Road Landfill and Customer Care call center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, reopening on Tuesday, Jan. 16, during normal operating hours.

Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open five warming centers for residents on Fri., Jan. 12, through Mon., Jan. 15, starting at 8 p.m. to use. Anyone staying in the warming centers must follow the county’s COVID-19 protocols that include wearing a mask, social distancing and undergoing a temperature check.
