Commissioner Larry Johnson, in partnership with STAND Inc. Executive Director Charles Sperling, is hosting the fourth annual National Opioid Summit. With a focus on continued education, proactive solutions and increasing advocacy to help with what may be America’s worst drug crisis, community stakeholders, youth, policymakers, and citizens are invited to attend the Opioid Summit. The summit will be held at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center, located at 3181 Rainbow Drive, Decatur, Ga. 30034, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Efforts to improve the watershed system throughout DeKalb County continue Monday, Sept. 18, with the launch of the Scott Boulevard Phase III Water Main Replacement Project. Crews will replace 19,650 linear feet of aging pipelines. The line repair project is expected to last approximately nine months (September 2023 to June 2024), barring any weather delays.

Morris Landers Drive NE, between Fisher Trail NE and Impala Drive NE, will be closed to through-traffic 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 19 to facilitate the sealing of lateral connection to the main line at 1838 Morris Landers Drive NE, Atlanta, Ga. Road closure and detour signs will be placed in the area during the road closure period advising motorists of construction work in the area and of local traffic restrictions.

DeKalb County Government is partnering with local faith leaders to distribute 5,000 boxes of 99 percent Georgia-grown fruits, vegetables and chicken hindquarters on Saturday, Sept. 16. “Hardworking families continue to struggle to keep food on the table,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. “DeKalb County and our faith partners are working hard to provide families relief and lessen the impact of high food prices.” Additionally, residents will receive cookies, fruit juice boxes and cereal.
