On Nov. 28, 2023, a stray cat was captured in the Willow Lake Drive area and later tested positive for rabies. A resident was attempting to place a stray cat inside a pet carrier when he was bitten on his chin and finger. Georgia is a rabies endemic state and the virus is present all year long. It is not unusual for the county to report several rabies cases each year.

Due to forecasted cold weather, DeKalb County will open five warming centers for residents on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and Wed. Dec. 6, starting at 8 p.m. each night to use. Anyone staying in the warming centers must follow the county’s COVID-19 protocols that include wearing a mask, social distancing and undergoing a temperature check.

The Family Night Out program offers a safe, fun environment for the whole family to share an exciting painting experience together. All ages are welcome to participate and encouraged to wear matching pajamas. Registration is $10 for a family of 2, $20 for a family of 4, $30 for a family of 6 and $5 for an additional person. The event will include painting supplies, food, music, photos and more. Pre-registration is required and on a first come, first served basis.

Commissioner Robert Patrick has joined forces for a second time with the recently established Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. chapter to organize a complimentary paper-shredding event in District 1. The winter shredding event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2, at Pleasantdale Park, located at 3650 Pleasantdale Rd., from 8 am to noon or until the truck reaches capacity. All DeKalb residents are welcome to attend this free event.

DeKalb County District 1 Commissioner Robert Patrick is set to host a community meeting on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m. to address the City of Chamblee's proposed annexation of portions of District 1. The gathering is scheduled to take place at the Embry Hill United Methodist Church, located at 3304 Henderson Mill Rd., Atlanta, GA 30341.
