DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has announced that the State of Emergency will remain in place through tonight and into tomorrow, as severe winter weather continues to create hazardous conditions across the region. Residents are strongly urged to shelter in place and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Freezing temperatures, icy roads, and challenging conditions remain a threat to public safety. For those who must travel, extreme caution is advised. Residents should avoid low-lying areas, bridges, and other locations prone to freezing.

“Our priority is the safety of every resident,” said CEO Cochran-Johnson. “While our crews are working tirelessly to address hazardous areas, the conditions remain dangerous. Please help us by staying home and off the roads to allow emergency responders to do their work effectively.”

Key Updates for Residents
•    Road Conditions: Despite extensive efforts, icy roads, including key routes such as Rockbridge Road and River Road, remain treacherous.
•    Travel Advisory: Travel is highly discouraged. Low temperatures continue to render road treatments less effective.
•    Emergency Services: First responders remain fully mobilized but are contending with delays due to stranded vehicles and icy conditions.

What Residents Should Do
1.    Shelter in Place: Avoid all non-essential travel to minimize risk and ensure emergency responders can access those in urgent need.
2.    Use Caution if Necessary: For essential travel, drive slowly and avoid low-lying areas, bridges, and known freeze zones.
3.    Stay Informed: Keep updated through official DeKalb County channels and emergency alerts.

Declaration of Emergency
This extended declaration aligns with Governor Kemp’s statewide emergency order, ensuring all necessary resources remain mobilized to protect public safety and respond effectively to the crisis.

“We are grateful for the dedication of our emergency teams and road crews,” added CEO Cochran-Johnson. “Your patience and cooperation are crucial as we work together to weather this storm and keep DeKalb County safe.”
