DeKalb County Commissioner Robert Patrick hosted a vibrant celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, recognizing two outstanding individuals for their contributions to the community. The event, held at Eclipse Di Luna in Dunwoody, honored Isabella Velarde and Victoria Chacón with the District 1 National Hispanic Heritage Month Trailblazer Award. Attendees gathered to support the honorees and celebrate Hispanic culture through music, dance, and fellowship.

Isabella Velarde, a Dunwoody native and first officer for Delta’s regional carrier, Endeavor Air, was recognized for her groundbreaking achievements in aviation. Born in El Salvador and raised in Georgia, Velarde has been a leader in promoting diversity and inclusion in a field often underrepresented by women and minorities. As the former president of the Women in Aviation War Eagle Collegiate Chapter at Auburn University, Velarde has inspired countless women to pursue careers in aviation. She continues to lead through her roles in professional organizations, including the Latino Pilots Association.

Victoria Chacón, a successful entrepreneur and media pioneer, was also honored for her significant impact on the Hispanic community in Georgia. Chacón, a Mexican immigrant, founded La Vision, the state’s first bilingual newspaper, which has since expanded into a major digital platform. Her leadership has earned recognition from U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff and international acclaim for her work in journalism and community service. Chacón’s contributions extend beyond media, with her active participation on the boards of numerous nonprofit organizations.

Commissioner Patrick expressed his gratitude for the honorees' dedication and perseverance, noting, "These remarkable women embody the spirit of resilience and service. Their contributions are not only shaping our community but also inspiring future generations."

The event was a powerful reminder of the rich cultural diversity within DeKalb County and the vital role that Hispanic leaders play in its growth and development.
