DeKalb County Cooperative Extension will host lunch and learn Family and Consumer Sciences virtual classes for free. The “Take it to the Trails: Let’s Get Physical” class will be on Thursday, August 22nd at 11:30 am. This class will educate participants on simple, cost-effective ways to become more physically active. This includes what to do before taking a hike and getting out on the trails.

DeKalb County Government is partnering with the DeKalb County School District and local faith leaders to distribute 3,000 bookbags filled with school supplies along with 5,000 boxes of fresh produce, chicken and lunch box snacks on Saturday, Aug. 3. “The school supplies and food we are distributing will help thousands of children and their families have a successful start to the new school year,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said.

In response to National Weather Service forecasts of heat indices exceeding 100 degrees, DeKalb County is opening cooling centers on July 31, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2. For a list of available cooling centers, visit www.dekalbcountyga.gov/weather. Water fountains will be accessible at county parks and libraries.
