The AARP Experience Corps is an evidence-based literacy program that improves the reading skills of children in kindergarten through the third grade for the past two years.  The Department is working in collaboration with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the AARP Foundation and the DeKalb County School District on this initiative. Recent data shows that DeKalb students on average have a reading proficiency of 26 percent, which means that 74 percent of students are reading below grade level.

Crews will facilitate a lane closure Thursday, June 30, at the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Ivy Lane to investigate and repair a broken water main. The DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) first became aware of the leak on May 30. The department has continued to monitor the leak while waiting for back-ordered materials needed for the repair to arrive. Those materials arrived June 29.

On Thursday, June 30, work to repair a leaking water main will be completed at the intersection of DeKalb Industrial Way and North Decatur Road from 9 a.m. through 1 p.m. DeKalb County contractors will repair leaks in the water transmission system of a 30-inch main and install new paving.

DeKalb Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs’ Friends of Flat Shoals Park will host a Book it to the Park book drive on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Flat Shoals Park, 4522 Flat Shoals Pkwy. Decatur, GA 30034. The Friends of Flat Shoals Park began hosting the Book it to the Park event shortly after the installation of the new book box in 2017.

DeKalb County Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department will host a Movies in the Park series during the month of July. Every Wednesday, in various locations across the county, a movie will be shown at dusk, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring family, friends, blankets, lawn chairs and food for each showing. All movies featured will be PG-13 and below rated films and appropriate for all ages to enjoy.
