In observance of Christmas Day on Monday, Dec. 26, and New Year’s Day on Monday, Jan. 2, sanitation service for residential customers will be based on a revised holiday schedule. The Central Transfer Station, North Transfer Station, Seminole Road Landfill, Customer Care call center, and Commercial Services will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, resuming services on Tuesday, Dec. 27, and Tuesday, Jan. 3, during normal operating hours.

DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs will hold an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly constructed large pavilion at Briarlake Forest Park on Thursday, December 22, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be held at Briarlake Forest Park, 3330 Briarlake Road, Decatur, GA 30033.

Commissioner Steve Bradshaw, in conjunction with the DeKalb County Planning and Sustainability Department and Community Development Department, is hosting a public meeting on the Memorial Drive Community Rebranding Initiative. The rebranding of Memorial Drive was one of the recommendations of the Memorial Drive Revitalization Corridor Plan, which started in 2019 and was adopted by the Board of Commissioners in 2020.

DeKalb County will begin a yearlong Bicentennial celebration on Dec. 9, 2022, which marks the founding of the county in 1822. DeKalb was formed by an act of the Georgia Legislature on Dec. 9, 1822, from portions of Fayette, Gwinnett and Henry counties. The county was named in honor of Johann de Kalb, a native of Germany and self-proclaimed baron who aided the American colonists in their fight for independence from England.

DeKalb County will unveil a rendering of a bicentennial mural depicting the county’s rich history during a kickoff on Dec. 9, 2022, which marks the founding of the county in 1822. The mural, which will show DeKalb’s history from prehistoric times to modern development, will go outside the county’s Maloof Auditorium in the city of Decatur.
