Dr. Bruce H. Wainer | Associate Medical Examiner

Bruce H Wainer, M.D., Ph.D. received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, PA, in 1969. He graduated Magna Cum Lauda and received the Phi Sigma Award in Biological Sciences and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He pursued an M.D. Ph.D. degree at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine from 1969 to 1975. He was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society there. He received the Sheard Sanford award from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for this PhD thesis work on the development of radioimmunoassays for opioids. He enrolled in the residency program in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Chicago Hospital and Clinics. He completed the program in 1978 and was recruited to the faculty as an Assistant Professor in a tenure tract position. During his tenure at the University of Chicago he rose through the ranks to full professor with tenure. He also served as Associate Chairman of the Department of Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences. During this time, he published more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed journal. He was awarded the McKnight Foundation Scholars award and was recognized as a highly cited neuroscientist by the Institute for Scientific Information. He also received funding from the NIH and ran a fully staffed research laboratory. He left Chicago in 1991 to assume the Pathology Chairmanship of the Department of Pathology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. In 1995 he moved to Emory University in 1995 to receive an Endowed chair for research related to Alzheimer’s disease. In 2007, he left academics to pursue further training in Diagnostic Neuropathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Following that he pursued Forensic Pathology training in Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, FL. Since 2010, he has worked in several Medical Examiner and Coroner’s office as a Forensic Pathologist and consulting Neuropathologist. He is presently an Associate Medical Examiner and Neuropathology Consultant at the Dekalb County Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur, GA.
