To implement DeKalb's Greenspace program, through the Georgia Community Greenspace Program, in February 2001, the Board of Commissioners created "The Initiative for a Green DeKalb." This initiative is spearheaded by a committee of elected officials, county and city representatives, and citizens charged with developing a comprehensive approach for the county's greenway system.
From 2001 - 2002, the Georgia Community Greenspace Program provided DeKalb County and its municipalities with grants totaling $6.4 million. This amount is shared between DeKalb County and its cities based on a pro rata share of population in unincorporated areas, as shown below, a total of $5.5 million is available to the County for preserving greenspace.
