Co-sponsors Commissioners Steve Bradshaw, District 4, and Michelle Long Spears, District 2, along with the Board of Commissioners and CEO Michael Thurmond, recognized October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a proclamation today at the Board of Commissioners meeting.

October was first declared as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989 acknowledging domestic violence. Domestic violence impacts people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.

“It will take all of us doing everything we can do to eradicate domestic violence and that requires leadership, survivors, community leaders, law enforcement and healthcare providers,” said Commissioner Bradshaw.

On Oct. 19, 2023, hundreds of metro residents will gather in downtown Decatur, Georgia, to join the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV) for its 32nd Annual Candlelight Vigil at 7 p.m. at the bandstand located behind the Decatur MARTA Station.

“Domestic violence survivors need to hear, see, and feel our support,” said Commissioner Spears, calling for action. “All of us must stand up against domestic violence. It’s time to take action, speak up, and ensure survivors receive the support they need to heal and become whole again.”

Anyone experiencing abuse in a relationship doesn't have to face it alone. One in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90 percent of these children are eyewitnesses to the violence.
