Featuring a unique treasure quest of 200 limited edition, engraved glass orbs
This year marks the 200th Anniversary of DeKalb County, GA and to commemorate the occasion, Commissioner Lorraine Cochran-Johnson will be hosting the DeKalb County District 7 Bicentennial Celebration & Glass Orb Quest on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve (3787 Klondike Road, Stonecrest, GA 30038).
According to the DeKalb History Center, DeKalb County was officially established on Dec. 9, 1822, shortly after the Land Lottery of 1821 by settlers of European descent and was previously the ancestral homeland of the Indigenous Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee Nations.
“Many notable people, organizations and events have contributed to DeKalb’s rich and diverse population and history,” said Commissioner Cochran-Johnson. “I am excited about this opportunity to engage and celebrate that history with my community.”
Co-hosted by the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs, this free, outdoor event will give residents an opportunity to learn about the county’s rich history, visit one of its most notable green spaces, and participate in a unique treasure hunt of 200 limited edition glass quest orbs, hand blown by Decatur Glassblowing. Each limited edition glass ball carries a special 200th Anniversary engraving by Commissioner Cochran-Johnson and is marked with a unique number.
“The Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary as an official DeKalb County park,” said Chuck Ellis, Director of the DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs. “We are proud to serve as the quest location site and are eager for residents to experience its natural wonders, as well as the efforts we’ve made as a county towards preserving its 2,500 plus acres.”
The quest will take place along the paved Arabia Mountain PATH between Vaughters Farm Mile 2.0 and Murphy Candler School Mile 5.8. Attendees are encouraged to park in the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve parking area and proceed to the Nature Center for the official Glass Orb Quest kick-off.
DeKalb residents will be limited to one glass orb as a keepsake on a first come, first served basis.
“I am sure the hand blown orbs will be well received because each is a one-of-a-kind treasure,” said Commissioner Cochran-Johnson. “I look forward to fellowshipping and taking photos with the 200 lucky orb finders at this once in a lifetime event.”
