Commissioner Larry Johnson Partners to Offer Mental Health First Aid Training to DeKalb Residents

Mental Health 101: Turning Knowledge into Action

DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson, in his role as the District 3 Commissioner and president of the National Association of Counties (NACo), partnered with NACo and the National Council on Mental Wellbeing to offer the National Council’s Mental Health First Aid USA training to DeKalb County residents on Feb. 28 at 6 p.m.

The training, titled “Mental Health 101: Turning Knowledge into Action,” is a 60-minute virtual course that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact and overviews appropriate supports.

Learning objectives for the training include:

1. Define and increase participants’ awareness of mental wellness, mental illness and recovery.
2. Identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in the workplace.
3. Explore strategies to help reduce stigma, build resiliency, and make wellness a priority so the community can move forward together.

“Unfortunately, the importance of understanding mental health is largely overlooked,” said Commissioner Johnson. “Mental health first aid is helping to bring that awareness. This training will make a difference.”
