DECATUR, Ga. — DeKalb County workers and emergency contractor crews currently are working to contain a major sewer spill at Snapfinger Creek in the unincorporated Lithonia area.

The spill, near Eagle’s Beek Circle, Lithonia, was discovered by Department of Watershed Management workers on a 48-inch creek crossing just north of the Snapfinger Wastewater Treatment Plant. County workers located the spill by tracking high bacteria counts in the area.

Residents in this area are warned to avoid the spill site and keep their pets from the waterway until further notice. The spill does not affect drinking water.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been notified.
