DECATUR, Ga.—A major sewer spill was reported Aug. 17 by DeKalb County to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
The spill occurred in a tributary that feeds into Nancy Creek near Mill Creek Road in Brookhaven.
Residents in this area are warned to avoid the spill site and keep their pets from the waterway until further notice.
A 10-inch diameter pipe appears to have been compromised by soil erosion, causing the spill. As soon as the source of the spill was identified, caution signs were posted in the area.
DeKalb County workers are making repairs and evaluating the extent of the spill. A final determination of the spill estimate is expected next week.
