Flooding Impacting Travel in DeKalb

DECATUR, Ga. – Drivers are urged to use caution as several roadways in DeKalb County are experiencing flooding.

Roads experiencing flooding include:

• Oakcliff Road
• Chamblee Dunwoody Road at the Peachtree Road underpass
• Peachtree Road and Broad Street
• Peachtree Road and Pierce Drive
• 2700 block of Caldwell Road
• Buford Highway and Corporate Blvd.

A flash flood warning is in effect for the northern half of DeKalb County until 7:15 pm. A flash flood warning indicates that rapid flooding may occur or is already occurring. There has been more than 2 inches of rain throughout the northern portion of the county, with some areas receiving more than 3.5 inches, especially along the I-85 corridor.

Additionally, a flood warning has been issued for the North Fork Peachtree Creek in DeKalb County. The creek is anticipated to crest over 15 feet, which will affect residential yards in the area. Other creeks throughout the county are also experiencing heightened levels and further flooding may occur.

Residents are encouraged to adhere to the following safety tips:

• If you come across a flooded roadway, “turn around, don’t drown.” A foot of water can stall and sweep vehicles away.
• When driving, turn on headlights and slow down.
• Beware of hydroplaning. Only one-twelfth of an inch of rain on the road and a speed of more than 35 miles of hours can cause a vehicle to hydroplane.
• Do not walk through flooded areas. Six inches of water can knock an adult off of their feet.
• Be aware that trees can fall during significant rain events.
• Beware of flood prone areas. Keep pets secure and safe from flood prone areas and high water levels.
