DECATUR, Ga. – The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department is offering firework safety tips to keep residents safe. Annually, more than 11,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated by hospitals in the United States, with young adults ages 20 to 24 making up the highest percentage of emergency room visits. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display conducted by trained professionals. Residents are encouraged to follow the safety tips below.
Firework Safety Tips
- Never try to relight fireworks.
- Purchase fireworks from a licensed fireworks dealer.
- Have a garden hose or bucket of water nearby.
- Follow all state laws regarding the use of fireworks.
- Carefully read the labels before igniting any fireworks.
- Ensure that an adult supervises all firework activities.
- Do not allow children to ignite fireworks.
- Wear eye protection when shooting fireworks.
- Do not light multiple fireworks at once.
- Never use fireworks indoors or close to buildings or vehicles.
- Do not engage in pranks with fireworks.
