DeKalb County Receives Grant for Biogas Feasibility Study

DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM), CEO Michael Thurmond and commissioners accepted a $25,000 grant from Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA). The award will fund a biogas generator feasibility study at the Pole Bridge Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“The Biogas Technical Assistance Program is providing grant funding up to $25,000 to local governments for biogas feasibility studies,” said GEFA Executive Director Kevin Clark. “The studies will help communities realize their renewable energy potential at landfills and wastewater treatment plants.”

Biogas generation is a proven, cost-effective technology that can provide long-term savings for wastewater treatment. The renewable-energy solution produces heat and energy from wastewater sludge, fats, oils, grease and food waste material to produce methane gas to produce electrical power.

“Biogas production from wastewater sludge will reduce the amount of sludge entering DeKalb’s landfill and increase the landfill lifespan,” said Scott Towler, director of DWM.
