DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has announced that the State of Emergency declared in response to severe winter weather conditions is now officially lifted. The decision comes as road conditions have improved significantly, and emergency crews have successfully addressed critical safety concerns across the county.
While the emergency declaration is lifted, residents are strongly urged to remain cautious, particularly during evening and nighttime hours, as lingering ice and freezing temperatures pose continued risks.
“As we return to normal operations, I want to thank the residents of DeKalb County for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time,” said CEO Cochran-Johnson. “Although conditions have improved, we urge everyone to exercise caution, especially after dark, as icy spots may persist.”
Travel Advisory from the National Weather Service (NWS)
The National Weather Service has issued the following guidance for residents who must travel:
• If you have to drive after dark, please continue to use extreme caution.
• Proceed slowly and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
• Melting snow and runoff from this afternoon will freeze on roads tonight, creating slick and dangerous road conditions.
• Roads in shady areas, especially secondary roads, hilly terrain, and north-facing slopes, remain ice-covered and will remain slick and dangerous through the night.
County Efforts
DeKalb County road crews and emergency responders have worked tirelessly to ensure public safety, deploying over 500 tons of road treatments and assisting stranded vehicles and residents. These efforts, combined with improving weather conditions, have allowed the county to lift the emergency declaration.
