DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond issued the following statement following the loss of life and property in Caribbean communities that many in DeKalb call home:

“We are saddened by the loss of life and property in DeKalb County following Tropical Storm Irma. We send prayers also to those in DeKalb who call the Caribbean communities home and who watched, helplessly, as many of their idyllic islands were reduced to ruins.

“The loss of life and property throughout the Caribbean has been heart-breaking and devastating. This has caused unbelievable anguish not only for those directly in the path of hurricanes Irma and Maria, but for the many thousands of DeKalb residents whose family members, friends and strong bonds remain on the islands.

“To witness such devastation, including the massive earthquakes in Mexico, has been a harrowing experience for those right here in our county. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of these proud, resilient citizens.

“We also are proud of those in DeKalb and throughout metro Atlanta who have contributed to the relief efforts in these devastated communities. Donating dollars, canned goods, bottled water and other necessities demonstrates a level of compassion that reminds us that we are all connected.”
