DECATUR, Ga. –DeKalb County began construction with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for an outdoor basketball court funded by a grant from the Atlanta Hawks Foundation at Gresham Park, located at 3113 Gresham Road, Atlanta.

“We’re excited about this groundbreaking ceremony and we’re going to be even more excited to cut the ribbon on the actual basketball court,” said DeKalb County Interim CEO Lee May. “The Atlanta Hawks are making a real investment here in DeKalb County.”

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs was awarded the funding for the basketball court after applying for a Hawks Foundation grant. The county has an existing partnership with the Hawks Foundation, which has provided Junior Hawks uniforms and sponsored coaches’ clinics in DeKalb.

Construction on the basketball court is expected to begin within the next 30 days and is expected to be completed by late fall.

“The outdoor basketball court is yet another opportunity for youngsters and adults to enjoy the sport of basketball,” said Roy Wilson, director of DeKalb County’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs. “This court will proved an additional community space for the citizens that use Gresham Park. “It’s a beautiful park and we get a lot of community use of the park. Adding an outdoor basketball court will just enhance what is already there.”

David Lee, executive director of the Atlanta Hawks Foundation, said, “We ultimately believe that by working together we will build this into a real bastion of hope for the young people,…we’re hoping that you will really enjoy what you gain here.”
